Men's Tennis Opens GLVC Play With 8-1 Win Over Illinois-Springfield

Springfield, Ill. - The Lewis University men's tennis team opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference season in fine fashion on Tuesday (March 23) afternoon with an 8-1 victory over Illinois-Springfield.

"The guys played solid tennis once again today and just took care of business on the court," Lewis head men's tennis coach Brett Bridel said.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while the host Prairie Stars drop to 2-6 on the campaign and 0-3 in GLVC play.

Lewis sophomore Uno Lapimaa (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese) extended his singles winning streak to 13 matches with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Punsisi Dayaratne at No. 1. Lapimaa also teamed up with classmate Tonis Irdoja (Tallinn, Estonia/Rocca Al Mare Kool) for the 8-3 win over Dayaratne and Josh Patrick at No. 1 doubles. Irdoja claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win over Patrick at No. 2 singles.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Michael Wojnarowski (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards/Moraine Valley C.C.) and Lorenz Pestinger (Bad Homburg, Germany/Humboldtschule/Missouri Valley) earned the 8-4 win over Connor and Matthew McGowan. Wojnarowski would later upend Connor McGowan, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Pestinger felled Sharma Kumar, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.

At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and Nick Heidenfelder (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) paired together for the 8-3 win over Kumar and Michael Czarny. Hardacre also picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Matthew McGowan at No. 4 singles.

Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 27) morning, as the Flyers head to Rensselaer, Indiana to face St. Joseph's for a 10 AM first serve.
