KENOSHA, Wis. - The Flyers were swept by UW-Parkside on Saturday afternoon in a pair of road Great Lakes Valley Conference games by scores of 6-2 and 1-0. Senior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) went all seven innings in game two to earn a tough-luck loss after allowing just two hits and an unearned run.

The snappy game two, played in an hour and a half, featured just five hits with three coming off the bats of Lewis. The lone error in the game proved to be costly for the Flyers. The Rangers had two outs in the fourth inning when Dave Lojeski hit a dribbler in front of the plate. Senior catcher Michael Fedoruk (Norridge, Ill./Notre Dame) fielded the ball but his throw took Lewis' first baseman off the bag. A stolen base and a single later and the Rangers had the only run they would need.

Junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) singled for the Flyers in the seventh with one out but Rangers' hurler Jack Olson earned a game ending double play off the bat Lewis sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South).

Olson finished with a complete game victory, allowing three hits and one walk to move his record to 2-1. The loss saw Scumaci drop his record to 4-2.

Game one, a nine inning affair, was just as close through most of the contest. Lewis took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Newsome.

Lewis starting pitcher Steve Almanza (Glendale, Ariz./Horizon) left a pair of Rangers on base in both the fourth and the fifth innings to keep Lewis in the lead. However it was the seventh when UW-Parkside broke through with five runs. Almanza had one on with two outs when a single, a wild pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Sophomore Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) entered the game and gave up three consecutive singles.

UW-Parkside added another tally in the eighth to make it 6-1. Lewis loaded the bases in the ninth but pushed just one across, on a RBI fly out by Thomas, to make the final 6-2.

Almanza earned the loss, giving up eight hits, three runs and four walks in 6.2 innings. Junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) and Wido each had two hits in the game.

"You don't win many doubleheaders scoring two runs on the day," head coach Tim McDonough said. "We had an inning in game one where Parkside out executed us offensively and that cost us. We're going to have to find ways to win. We need some big hits and guys to step up. We hope to do that tomorrow."

The wins give UW-Parkside an 8-15 overall record. The Rangers are 3-7 in GLVC play. Lewis drops to 13-14 overall and 4-6 in conference.

The two teams will play again on Sunday starting at noon.
