Box Score

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Flyers ran their win-streak to six games on Thursday with a 3-2 decision over in-region foe Northwood. The streak is Lewis' longest since 2003.

Junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) went seven innings surrendering just two unearned runs to get the victory. He scattered two hits, two walks while striking out six.

The Flyers scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) singled to score junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton), who had walked and stole second.

Following a Northwood run in the top of the third, Lewis took the lead back in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) walked and stole second. He advanced to third on a single by junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport). Senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) followed with a RBI ground out.

Lewis led by a 2-1 score until Northwood knotted it in the sixth.

The Flyers scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Joe Carbone (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Florida Gulf Coast University) walked. Junior Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) pinch ran for Carbone and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Vucsko advanced to third on an error and then scored on a single by Forkin.

The Lewis bullpen shut the door from there. Sophomore Drew Hicks (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) pitched a scoreless eighth and senior Ted Bartnik (Diamond, Ill./Coal City/Illinois Valley CC) earned his third save of the season thanks to a scoreless ninth.

Forkin finished the day with two of Lewis' three hits and an RBI. The Flyers benefited from eight Northwood walks.

"It was another good team win," head coach Tim McDonough said. "Tyler threw outstanding and so did the bullpen. We made some errors in the field but we turned some key double plays and had pitchers pitch through some miscues. Sometimes you need to do that."

Northwood, who finished second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season, falls to 5-2.

Lewis is 7-5 on the year and 6-1 on the Florida a trip. Lewis concludes the southern swing with an 8 a.m. CT first pitch on Friday against West Virginia Wesleyan.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 9th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
