OWENSBORO, Ky. - Lewis baseball split a road Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon. Lewis lost the opener 3-2, before winning nightcap 13-3. Junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport), who is hitting .430 on the year, went 6-for-9 on the day with two RBI and a run scored in game two.
Lewis won three-of-four over the Panthers thanks to Forkin's 10-for-15 weekend.
In game one, Lewis took a 2-0 lead with lone runs the third and fourth. Junior Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) homered in the third and senior Ryan McManaman (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan)'s (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) sacrifice fly scored junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) in the fourth for Lewis' only two runs of the opener.
Kentucky Wesleyan scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth, with three runs on five hits and a Lewis error. Forkin singled in the fifth and seventh but couldn't get past first. In the sixth Lewis left two runners on.
Junior Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss (3-3), giving up 10 runs on three hits in a complete-game six innings. He walked none and struck out four.
"We had a couple opportunities and in a one-run game you're always one hit away," head coach Tim McDonough said. "We just didn't get that hit in game one. Credit Kentucky Wesleyan for making pitches."
The Flyers offensive exploded in game two with a run in the second, five in the third, five in the seventh and two in the ninth.
Newsome started on the mound and went five innings for the win (2-2). He gave up just one unearned run on four hits and a walk in 5.0 innings. Freshman Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) pitched a hit-less three innings, allowing just a walk.
Lewis' five-run inning in the third was highlighted by a three-run home run by senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton). Five different Flyers recorded an RBI in the seventh inning. The final four batters of the order went 7-of-18 with six RBI. Sophomore Cameron Anello (Homer Glen, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Zach Stetson (Kankakee, Ill./Herscher) each had two hits and two RBI.
Sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) hit a solo home run in the second.
"We were waiting for an offensive explosion all weekend and it was good to see in game two," McDonough said. "House's big home run made us exhale a bit. Then we got big contributions from the bottom of the order."
Kentucky Wesleyan is now 15-22 (7-12 GLVC). Lewis is 20-18 (11-9 GLVC). Lewis' 20 wins matches their total from last season. The Flyers host Grand Valley State in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
