ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis baseball team dropped a pair to No. 29 Grand Valley State 9-5 and 8-0 in a non-conference doubleheader at Brennan Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) continued his hot play at the plate with three hits on the day and two runs scored.

The Lakers opened up the first inning of game one with an RBI double by Cory Maguire. The Flyers responded in their half of the inning with a sacrifice fly by senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Joseph's/Triton) for his 28th RBI of the season. Grand Valley then opened the game up with a four run second inning to go up 5-1.

Lewis rallied with a run in the third and a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) to bring the game to 5-4. The Lakers responded in their half of the sixth with a two-run homer by Jeremy Trinkle for a 7-4 lead. Grand Valley also added a pair of runs in the seventh with one coming on a solo home run to the deepest part of the park in right center by Maguire.

Householder led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center followed by a walk by Amesquita. Sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) drove home pinch runner Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) to cut the deficit to 9-5. Lewis starter Matt Zicher (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey/Triton) took the loss and falls to 2-1. Grand Valley's Kevin Schultz (2-0) picked up his second victory of the season for the Lakers.

Grand Valley opened up game two with an RBI single by Brian Robinson and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Trepel and added two more runs in the second and fourth to go up 4-0. The Lakers added their fifth run of the game on a straight steal of home by Cody Grice.

Grand Valley scattered another three runs to win the game 8-0. The Flyer bats went silent in game two with only five hits.

Lewis starter Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) took the loss in game two and falls to 1-5 on the year. Daniel Holcomb (1-0) picked up the victory for the Lakers.

The Flyers were unable to get the job done defensively in the twinbill, committing six errors in the two games.

"The defense let us down today," head coach Tim McDonough said. "It is one thing to not cash in on opportunities of your own but when you do that and give them extra shots then you have no chance."

With the losses, Lewis falls to 20-20 while the Lakers improve to 26-7.

Lewis returns to conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Indianapolis at noon.
