Romeoville, Ill. - The UW-Parkside softball team proved to be rude guests on Wednesday (Apr. 14) evening, as the Rangers pounded a combined 30 hits and two home runs on their way to the 9-6, 8-0 (5 inn.), Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over No. 13 Lewis University at the Lewis Softball Field.
"UW-Parkside beat us in every facet today," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "Pitching, defense, offense - they really took care of business and just played a strong, strong game."
UW-Parkside's Krista Kelly and Amy Horn batted a combined 10-for-17 with eight RBI, including two home runs on the afternoon. In the opener, Kelly was 4-for-5 with four RBI, two runs scored, including a solo homer, while Horn was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer.
With the sweep, UW-Parkside improves to 18-12 on the season and 9-7 in GLVC action, while the host Flyers fall to 21-9 overall and 11-5 in conference play.
Freshman shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led the Flyers offensively in the opener with a 3-for-4 performance and a pair of RBI. Junior outfielder Sarah Hurley (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield Central) added a pair of hits and a run scored.
Lewis starting pitcher Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss in the opener for the Flyers. Habel (9-3) allowed nine runs, four earned, and 16 hits in 4.2 innings. UW-Parkside starting pitcher Jill Vondrak (7-2) earned the complete-game victory for the Rangers, surrendering six runs, three earned, while allowing eight hits and striking out four batters.
Defense proved to be the downfall in the nightcap for Lewis, as five Flyer errors led to five unearned runs for UW-Parkside. Lewis starting pitcher Allison Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Trinity/Triton) was tagged with the loss, as she gave up six runs, three earned, and six hits in 3.1 innings. UW-Parkside starting pitcher Kallie Walczak (5-5) struck out seven Flyer batters on her way to the complete-game, two-hit shutout victory.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Apr. 17) afternoon, as the Flyers head to Evansville for a 12 PM doubleheader against Southern Indiana.
