ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Flyers swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at Brennan Field by identical 2-1 scores. Lewis limited a Greyhounds team averaging eight runs a game, to just two on the day.
The Greyhounds took a quick lead in the first inning of game one on a two-out solo home run by Scott Mourey.
Lewis loaded the bases with two outs in the third however senior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice)'s (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) line drive was caught by the UIndy's first baseman.
Lewis scored the only two runs they would need in the sixth thanks to a pair of two-out RBI hits. First sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) doubled to the deepest corner of the outfield, right center, to score junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) from first. Freshman Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) followed with a single to left to plate Wido and give Lewis a one-run advantage.
Freshman Steve Almanza (Glendale, Ariz./Horizon) started and went seven innings to move his record to 4-2. He allowed just the one run with three walks and six hits.
"Steve had a gutty performance today," head coach Tim McDonough said. "To match a good pitcher on the other side pitch-for-pitch is great for his development."
Almanza gave way to another freshman in the eighth, Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia). Frahm kept Indianapolis off the board in the final two innings to get his first save of his career. Frahm earned a double play to end the eighth and a tapper back to the mound in the ninth with runners on first and third and two outs.
Just like the opening game, UIndy scored first in game two with a lone run in the fourth. It came on an RBI single by Travis Capps. The liner up the middle went off Lewis shortstop Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport)'s (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) glove. Freshman centerfielder Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) threw to third to get the final out of the inning on the play just a moment after the runner who was on second crossed the plate.
Lewis didn't take long to tie it up, as the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the inning senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) hit a long home run over the right center field wall. The next two Flyers struck out before Wido doubled deep to right field. Like the opening game, it was Norwood hitting a two-out RBI single to right field.
The one-run lead was all senior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) would need. He finished earned the win to move his record to 6-2, going all seven innings. He gave up five hits and struck out five.
Scumaci helped out himself in the fourth inning when UIndy had runners at first and second with no outs. He fielded a bunt and fired to third base to get the lead runner. In the sixth he had the same situation and earned a 1-6-3 double play and a strikeout to get out of the jam.
"Joe looked the best I've seen him late in a game today," McDonough said. "He got stronger as the game went on and really limited their chances."
The snappy game two lasted barely an hour.
"Sometimes you need to out-score a team," McDonough said. "But today it came down to making pitches and important defensive plays as it usually does in a one-run game."
Indianapolis falls to 23-15 (12-6 GLVC). Lewis improves to 22-20 (13-9 GLVC). The 22 overall wins and 13 GLVC wins are the most for a Lewis baseball team since 2002.
The two clubs play again on Sunday in a doubleheader at noon.
