Owensboro, Ky. - Lewis University junior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) went 5-for-7 with a homer and five RBI to help propel the No. 13 Flyers to the 3-0, 7-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader sweep over host Kentucky Wesleyan at Foster Field on Sunday (Apr. 18) afternoon.
With the sweep, Lewis improves to 25-9 overall and 15-5 in GLVC action, while the host Panthers drop to 14-23 on the campaign and 9-11 in conference play.
"We knew that this weekend was important for us in order to remain in contention for first place in the GLVC," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "We did what we set out this weekend to do and we needed that.
"We had some very good pitching today and actually the entire weekend from our staff," DiMatteo continued. "They were outstanding when we needed them the most."
DiMatteo's pitching staff held Kentucky Wesleyan to one earned run and nine hits in 14 innings of work on Sunday.
Lewis sophomore Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) tossed a complete-game shutout in the opener, as she surrendered three hits and struck out four batters to improve to 11-3 on the campaign. Flyer freshman Amy Christopher (Lafayette, Colo./Holy Family) earned her second win of the week in the nightcap, as she allowed one run and six hits in five innings of work to improve her record to 3-2 this season.
Harmon got the ball rolling for the Flyers in the opening game, as she roped a bases-loaded single in the top of the first inning, to put Lewis ahead, 1-0. The Flyers would tack on two more runs in the third inning on RBI singles from both Kayla Smith (Glendale Heights, Ill./Glenbard North) and Sarah Hurley (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield Central). Harmon, along with freshmen Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) each had two hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, Harmon and Vucsko provided much of the damage for the Flyer offense. Harmon went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI, while Vucsko was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI. Freshman catcher Alexis Munaco (Bloomingdale, Ill./Lake Park) added two hits and a RBI for the Flyers in the win.
Kentucky Wesleyan's Suzy Gentili (11-14) was the losing pitcher in both games for the host Panthers, as she allowed 10 runs and 22 hits in 14 innings of work.
Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 20), as they head to Chicago, to square off with St. Xavier for a 3 PM (CST) twinbill.
