Top Of Lineup Spurs Women's Tennis To 7-2 Win Over Missouri-St. Louis

St. Louis, Mo. - The Lewis University women's tennis team rode the momentum of Thursday's 9-0 sweep over Maryville and earned the 7-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over Missouri-St. Louis on Friday (Apr. 2) afternoon.

With the win, Lewis improves to 5-5 on the season, while the host Tritons drop to 5-6 on the campaign.

Lewis dominated in doubles action as they won all three matches to take the early 3-0 advantage over UMSL.

The Flyers' regionally-ranked tandem of Jana Schulz (Recklinghausen, Germany/Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium) and Bayley Brown (Evansville, Ind./Evansville Central) opened with the 8-2 win over Stephanie Thompson and Altanzul Gombo at No. 1 doubles. Schulz also dropped Thompson at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2, while Brown claimed the 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 come-from-behind win over Leticia Garcia at No. 2 singles.

At No. 2 doubles, Lewis junior Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and sophomore Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) picked up the 8-5 victory over Katie Rynkiewich and Kristiana Lazarova. Hargrove claimed a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Sai Pujitha Bandi at No. 3 singles, while Kessler also defeated Lazarova, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

Freshman Jody Wagner (Avon, Ohio/Avon) and sophomore Maggie Novack (Fort Wayne, Ind./Carroll) completed the doubles sweep at No. 3, edging Bandi and Garcia, 9-7.

Lewis returns to campus on Saturday (Apr. 3), as they welcome Indianapolis for a 10 AM (CST) first serve at the Jack Oremus Tennis Courts.
