ST. LOUIS - The Lewis bats came alive on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis. The Flyers swept UMSL by scores of 9-3 and 10-6.
"I think game one's win carried over to game two," head coach Tim McDonough said. "We have been struggling in our mid-week games all year so today's effort was good to see. Plus anytime you can get two road wins within the region it is a good thing."
The Flyers fell behind in game one, giving up two runs in the opening frame. However Lewis took the lead for good in the second with a four spot. Lewis would add two in the third and then a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Five Flyers recorded two hits in the game. Junior Vince Campagna (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) had a pair of doubles and three RBI. Sophomore Sean Ruane (Roswell, Ga./Blessed Trinity) doubled twice, scored twice and knocked in a run.
Junior Matt Zicher (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey/Triton) went the distance for the Flyers on the bump. He allowed three runs on five hits while striking out four in seven innings. Opposing hitters were just 2-for-10 against him with runners on base. Zicher's record improves to 3-1.
"Matt pitched well in game one and the offense really came alive," McDonough said.
In game two, the Flyers scored two in the first, five in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Senior Joe Carbone (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Florida Gulf Coast University) doubled in the third to knock in a run. An inning later he singled to score junior Mike Vucsko (Evergreen Park, Ill./Marist) for his second RBI of the game.
Ruane scored two more runs in game two, walking three times. The Lewis attack was aided by five UMSL errors.
The Tritons got to Lewis starter sophomore Ryan Servos (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in the fourth when UMSL scored four runs. He finished 3.2 innings, with all four runs in the fourth being unearned. Junior Charles Gille (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) finished the fourth inning to pick up the victory and improve his record to 1-2.
Senior Eric Esposito (Lemont, Ill./Lemont/Triton), senior Ted Bartnik (Diamond, Ill./Coal City/Illinois Valley CC) and freshman Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) each pitched a hit-less inning the rest of the way.
"I thought our bullpen did a good job in game two of not letting UMSL get back into it and we added a run late to give us some breathing room," McDonough said.
UMSL falls to 10-34. Lewis improves to 24-22. The Flyers return to conference play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Bellarmine on Saturday and Sunday.
A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers more than 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields.
