LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lewis dropped game one of a baseball doubleheader at Bellarmine on Sunday 10-7. The Flyers led game two 13-7 when the game was suspended due to rain in the middle of the sixth. The game will be continued on Monday before the two clubs play their scheduled doubleheader.
Senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning of game two. Lewis surrendered the lead in the bottom of the first with two unearned runs thanks to two errors. The bottom of the inning was halted by a rain delay. Bellarmine took the lead in the second with three runs, two of which were unearned runs.
Down 5-2, Lewis grabbed the lead back with five runs in the top of the fourth. Junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) grounded out to first base to knock in the first run of the inning. Lewis scored their next four with two outs. First it was Householder scoring senior Michael Fedoruk (Norridge, Ill./Notre Dame) on a triple. Junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) singled to the pitcher, but junior Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) didn't force the issue and stayed at third base. It was a good choice as junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) followed with a three-run home run.
The Flyers had another five spot in the fifth inning. Forkin, Amesquita and Newsome each had an RBI in the frame. Sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) had a two-out two-RBI single to score Amesquita and Householder.
Koerner hit a solo home run in the sixth to make the score 13-7. The game was suspended in the middle of the sixth due to rain.
In game two, Newsome had four RBI, Householder had three and Wido and Forkin each had two.
Senior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) started and is still in the game, in position to get the victory.
Lewis took the lead in game one with a lone run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by freshman Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park). Bellarmine took the lead for good with five runs in the bottom half of the second. The big blow came on a three-run home run by Chris Wiedmar.
Lewis tried to rally back, scoring seven runs in the game, but Bellarmine scored a single run each inning up until the eighth to provide enough insurance.
Wido hit a two-run home run in the seventh for Lewis.
Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning thanks to back-to-back two-out singles by Forkin and Householder. However after Bellarmine brought in their closer, Amesquita struck out swinging.
Freshman Steve Almanza (Glendale, Ariz./Horizon) took the loss. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) in five innings on 13 hits. Almanza's record falls to 4-3.
The games were moved from Bellarmine's on-campus field to St. Xavier High School's rain friendly artificial turf field.
Lewis is 24-23 (13-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Bellarmine is 27-21 (14-10 GLVC).
