LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Lewis baseball won a suspended game over Bellarmine 13-7 on Monday afternoon, however dropped a 5-2 decision in the regularly scheduled game which followed.
In the suspended game, senior Joe Scumaci (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence/Triton) earned the win to move his record to 7-2. Scumaci's seventh victory is the most for a Lewis pitcher since Matt Petrusek won seven in 2002. Scumaci went 5.0 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (three earned). Lewis led 13-7 after five and half innings when the game was halted. Neither team scored in the final inning and a half played on Monday.
In game two, Bellarmine scored the first two runs of the game in the third inning. Following a double play, third baseman junior Miguel Amesquita (Hometown, Ill./Brother Rice/Triton) committed a throwing error to keep the inning alive. Three hits later and the Knights led 2-0.
Lewis threatened in the sixth inning when junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) and senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) led the inning off with singles. Amesquita bunted them over but junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) followed with a strikeout. Following a walk by freshman Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park), freshman Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) struck out to end the inning.
Bellarmine added a run in their half of the sixth and seventh innings to make it a 4-0 game. Bellarmine put Braxton Graven into pitch in the eighth for starter Aaron Deatherage and the Lewis bats showed some live. Sophomore Michael Wido (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) came off the bench to record a pinch-hit two-RBI single. His base hit scored Amesquita and Householder. However those would be the only runs Lewis would score. Bellarmine added a single run in the eighth for insurance to make the final 5-2.
Sophomore Pat Lahey (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) took the loss, going 6.2 innings and allowing four runs (two earned) on 11 hits. His record is now 3-5.
"We missed some opportunities in game two, leaving 12 guys on base," head coach Tim McDonough said. "Pat threw well enough to win but give credit to Bellarmine. We didn't give the game away; it was just a game they won. "
Koerner finished the game two-for-three and a walk for Lewis.
Bellarmine improves to 28-22 (15-11 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Lewis falls to 25-24 (14-13 GLVC).
The Flyers are at St. Francis on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is 4 p.m.
Lewis will finish their season with four crucial conference games against St. Joseph's this weekend. Saturday's first game will air live on Lakeshore Television at noon.
One more GLVC win and Lewis will have their most since 18 in 1997.
