JOLIET, Ill. - Lewis split a doubleheader with St. Francis on Tuesday evening at Silver Cross Field. The Flyers won game one 6-1, but fell 2-0 in game two.

In game one, junior Matt Zicher (Arlington Heights, Ill./Hersey/Triton) improved his record to 4-1 with his second consecutive complete game victory. He allowed just one run on three hits while striking out four batters.

"Game one was a clean game in terms of pitching, fielding and timely hitting," head coach Tim McDonough said. "On the mound, Zicher's given us back-to-back good starts."

Lewis got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second inning. Junior Ryan Koerner (LeRoy, Ill./LeRoy) had a two-RBI single in the frame. Junior Richard Forkin (Orland Park, Ill./Lockport) followed with an RBI single.

Zicher had help behind him in the bottom of the second. After the first two St. Francis batters reached, freshman Derek Thomas (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Kennedy) made a diving catch on a line drive in centerfield. The next St. Francis batter lifted a deep drive to left that senior Scott Householder (Berwyn, Ill./St. Josephs/Triton) brought in. A fielder's choice later and Lewis was out of trouble.

St. Francis added a lone run in the third however the Flyers got it back in the fourth on an RBI double by Householder to score Forkin.

Lewis added insurance runs in the top of the second with a two-out rally. Thomas knocked in a pair with a single to center.

Lewis had a 12-3 edge in hits. Every Lewis starter in game one got a hit.

In game two, junior Tyler Newsome (Palos Heights, Ill./Marist/South Suburban CC) started on the mound. He threw five shutout innings, allowing six hits to get a no decision. He surrendered the game to freshman Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia), who gave up two runs in the sixth to earn the loss.

Householder had two hits in the game, including a double.

"Give credit to St. Francis in game two," McDonough said. "They kept us off balance and we didn't get two-out hits when we needed them."

St. Francis is now 28-13. Lewis is 26-25.

"It was nice to get alot of guys in today," McDonough said.

Lewis hosts St. Joseph's on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's first game will be televised live on Lakeshore Public Television.
