GLVC Softball Tournament: Lewis 10, Quincy 0 in PDF Format
East Peoria, Ill. - Friday night's Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Tournament featured two All-GLVC pitchers in Lewis University's Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and Quincy's Torie Bunzell.
Habel, an All-GLVC Second Team selection, won the battle as she tossed a complete-game, seven-hit shutout to lead the Flyers to the 10-0 victory over the Hawks at the Eastside Centre on Friday (May 7) night.
Habel, who improved to 17-7 on the campaign, struck out three Hawks in the win.
"Today was a battle of two very good, All-Conference pitchers and today Karissa was the better pitcher," Lewis head softball coach George DiMatteo said. "She kept Quincy's hitters off balance with different pitches and they just couldn't get a good feel for her. She made life real easy on our defense."
Bunzell (25-7), who was named the GLVC Pitcher of the Year, allowed five runs, four earned, and nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Offensively, Lewis was led by freshman shortstop Michelle Vucsko (Chicago, Ill./Marist). Vucsko went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored.
"Michelle really jumped started our offense today," DiMatteo said. "We truly played the perfect game. We had great pitching, solid defense and clutch hitting."
With the win, Lewis improves to 35-15 on the season and will take on Northern Kentucky at 3PM on Saturday (May 8) afternoon. Quincy falls to 36-14 on the campaign.
The Flyers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as junior first baseman Stephanie Harmon (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield South) plated freshman center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) with a RBI double off of Bunzell.
Lewis extended that lead to 3-0 in the third inning, as Vucsko tagged Bunzell for a two-run homer, her third round-tripper of the season.
The Flyers added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning, as Harmon plated Lewis pinch runner Lexie Vernon (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) with a squeeze bunt. Vucsko, who advanced to third on the play, would score on a fielding error by Quincy second baseman Monica Gray to put Lewis ahead, 5-0.
Lewis put the game away in the seventh inning, as they pushed across five runs off of Quincy reliever Lauren Francis. Lewis pinch hitter Kara Harmatys (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) roped a two-run RBI single, while sophomore catcher Mary Giancarlo (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and Hefler each chipped in RBI in the frame.
