ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis women's soccer team moved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play thanks to a 1-0 win over Maryville (1-2, 1-1 GLVC) on Friday afternoon at the Lewis Soccer Field.
The game's only goal came 3:28 into the second half. Senior Jessica Summers-Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz./Pinnacle) was taken down on the right side of the box. A foul was called and Lewis was awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) took the shot and found the right side of the net for the only goal Lewis would need.
Maryville's best chance to respond came in the 67th minute when Calli Anderson hit the crossbar with a shot.
Lewis held a 13-10 edge in shots.
"I'm happy we got the result today," head coach Chris Koenig said. "But we definitely have a lot of areas to improve. Maryville really put us under pressure in the second half and we didn't respond that well."
Senior goaltender Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) made six saves, recording her second consecutive shutout and seventh of her career.
"I am happy with our defensive effort," Koenig said. "It's nice to get two shutouts."
Lewis continues conference play on Sunday when the Flyers host Missouri S&T at 2:30 p.m.
