Romeoville, Ill. - Last weekend proved to be a rough start to the 2010 soccer season for Lewis University, but the Flyers got back on the winning track with four first half goals on their way to the 6-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Maryville at the Lewis Soccer Field on Friday (Sept. 10) afternoon.

Sophomore Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) was the offensive catalyst for the Flyers, as he scored two of the Flyers' first three goals in the opening 13 minutes. Lewis senior midfielder Mardoche Beya (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) was close behind with a goal and a pair of helpers.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in GLVC action, while the visiting Saints fall to 0-2 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

While the Flyers were more than efficient offensively, Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles was looking for a more complete team performance, specifically on the defensive side.

"I look at nine shots on goal (by Maryville) and that's a problem," Fiffles said. "We did things better defensively (than last week), but we still need improvement.

"There were some encouraging things out there today," Fiffles continued. "We put six goals on the board.

"I thought our defense was a little more consistent than last Sunday, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Lewis forwards Robens Decius (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades/East Central) and Armin Vrebac (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) each posted a goal and an assist for the Flyers, while freshman midfielder Bryan Powers (Lake St. Louis, Mo./St. Dominic) collected his first career tally.

Lewis goalkeepers Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) and Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence) combined for nine saves to earn the shutout for the Flyers.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 12) afternoon, as the Flyers welcome Missouri S&T to the Lewis Soccer Field for a 12 p.m. first kick.
