DENVER - Junior Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) hit .481 and had a career-high 16 kills as No. 14 Lewis defeated No. 12 Metro State 3-1 (27-25, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23) on Saturday afternoon at the Colorado Premier Challenge.

"For awhile everything Hannah hit was a kill," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "It wasn't until game four Metro blocked or dug her."

Sophomore Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) recorded 12 kills and eight digs. Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) added a double-double of 12 digs and 10 kills. Senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) had 50 assists, seven kills and six digs.

Lewis trailed 19-17 in the opening set when a 5-0 run gave the Flyers a three-point advantage. Lewis earned set point at 24-21, only to see Metro Sate knot it at 24 thanks to three consecutive kills. A Koeneman kill gave Lewis their fifth set point. This time a Metro State attack error gave the set to the Flyers.

Lewis held a 20-17 advantage in the second set only to see Metro knot it at 20 with four straight points. A Lewis timeout stopped the run and the squads traded points until a Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) kill and a Metro State attack error gave Lewis their 27th and 28th points.

Lewis looked to be pulling away in the third set with three consecutive points to make the score 15-12. However Metro State responded with three straight points of their own to knot it back up. The Flyers led 20-19 when Metro State closed the set on a 6-2 run to take the frame.

The fourth set was more of the same, every time Lewis seemed to be pulling away the Road Runners came back. Lewis held a 15-11 lead only to see Metro State advance within one at 18-17. The Flyers regained a 22-18 advantage, before Metro State scored three straight points. However Lewis never allowed Metro State to tie it up and the Flyers won the match on a Metro State attack error.

Lewis improves to 6-1, Metro State falls to 4-3. The Flyers will play either West Florida or Regis at 6 p.m. CT for the "Silver Championship."
