ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Following a scoreless first half, Missouri S&T outscored Lewis 2-1 in the second to defeat the Flyers and give Lewis their first conference loss of the season.
Missouri S&T scored the game's first goal 5:22 into the second half. Kimberly Ekholm sent a cross from the corner of the box to Melia Miller in front of the goal. Miller was able to find the back of the net before Lewis defenders could clear the ball.
Lewis knotted it up nine minutes later when sophomore Libby Cooper (Batavia, Ill/Batavia/UW-Milwaukee) corralled a poor goal kick by Missouri S&T goaltender Stacey Luquette. Cooper gained possession, moved slightly toward the goal and then drove the ball in the net.
However Lewis' glory would be short lived. Missouri S&T took the lead back just 22 seconds later. Melissa Young's shot was saved by Lewis goaltender Megan George (Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), but Morgan Lockowitz took the deflection and put it in the goal for Missouri S&T.
"We made a point the last two games to not give up anything at the end of halves and after goals but today we had a mental error cost us," head coach Chris Koenig said. "This conference is too strong to not expect mistakes cost you."
Lewis had chances down the stretch, possessing the ball for most of the final 30 minutes. But each time it seemed Lewis' shots would sail high.
In the end Lewis held a 16-13 advantage in shots, but lost on the scoreboard 2-1. George finished with six saves.
"I thought on Friday we won ugly, but today we lost while looking better," Koenig said. "They did everything I asked of them at halftime but we didn't get that result we wanted."
Missouri S&T improves to both 2-1 overall and in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Flyers fall to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC.
Lewis hits the road on Friday for a conference match at Southern Indiana. Start time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
