Evansville, Ind. - Lewis University sophomore midfielder Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) posted two goals and an assist to lift the visiting Flyers to the 3-1 come-from-behind Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Southern Indiana at Strassweg Field on Friday (Sept. 17) night.
With the win, Lewis improves to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in GLVC action, while the Screaming Eagles fall to 3-3 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Southern Indiana was the first to find the back of the net, as senior forward Simon Rawnsley beat Lewis goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) at the 6:56 mark of the first period to give the Screaming Eagles the 1-0 lead. USI senior midfielder Michael Simcock assisted on the play.
Lewis would quickly respond, as McGowan evened up the score at 1-apiece less than two minutes later. Flyer junior forward Robens Decius (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades/East Central College) dished out the assist on the play.
McGowan struck again, as he broke up the deadlock with an unassisted goal in the 21st minute to push Lewis ahead, 2-1.
Lewis junior forward Aloiso Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha/Marshaltown C.C.) added an insurance goal in the 68th minute, as he headed in a McGowan feed past USI goalkeeper Jeffrey Neidlinger for the final score of 3-1.
Kieruzal made five saves in goal for the Flyers.
"Sebastian played well tonight and made a lot of nice saves," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said.
