ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) had 21 digs and 20 kills to lead No. 10 Lewis to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-22, 29-27) victory over No. 9 Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup Saturday night at Neil Carey Arena, aired live on Lakeshore Television.
"Lauren was all over the place, front row and back row," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "When you have a player that gives everything it sparks the entire team. I'm just the lucky coach that gets to watch her play."
Lewis improves to 9-1 and 2-0 in GLVC play while Indianapolis, the preseason GLVC favorite, falls to 7-4 and 0-2 in conference play.
The Flyers were backed by a loud vocal crowd for the second straight night.
"I really appreciate the fan support we receive," Smith said. "They're high energy, keep it classy and really make a difference."
The Flyers jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead in the opening set before UIndy responded with a 5-0 run of their own, recording two services errors. A 5-1 run by Lewis extended the lead to 15-11 with the help of two solo blocks from senior Danielle Mount (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport). The Greyhounds were able to tie up the score at 17-17, forcing a Flyers timeout. Lewis and UIndy traded points until 23-23 forcing the Flyers to call their final timeout. A kill by the Greyhounds and a Lewis attack error gave UIndy the set, 25-23.
The second set was deadlocked until 14-14 when the Flyers went on a 4-0 run. Lewis maintained the lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-20 on a block by Seliga.
Lewis jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the third thanks to three consecutive kills. After trading points for much of the set an Adria Phillips (South Bend, Ind./Riley/Indiana) ace brought the Lewis lead to 21-18. Two kills by Seliga at 23-21 and 24-22 gave Lewis the set, 25-22.
The Greyhounds opened up the fourth set to an 11-8 advantage. The Flyers were able to chip away at the lead, tying the score at 13-13. Two consecutive kills by Lewis gave the Flyers a 20-19 lead followed by a kill by UIndy and a kill by Lewis senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour). However Lewis asked for time when the UIndy tied the score at 23. Seliga responded with a kill to give Lewis match point however a kill by UIndy kept the Greyhounds alive at 24-24. Down the stretch Lewis would earn three more match points and UIndy would get a set point of their own at 26-25 before another Seliga kill tied it at 26. A Mount kill made the score 28-27 when Lewis finally closed the Greyhounds out. They did it with their defense, with Carly Perschnick (Dwight, Ill./Dwight Township/Nova Southeastern)/Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) combining on a block for the 29th point.
Ruedi added 46 assists and 11 digs for the Flyers, missing a triple-double by one kill. Phillips added 18 digs while Perschnick and Krumwiede each had eight kills for the Flyers. Kristina Hefferan led the Greyhounds with 13 kills.
"I'm happy we were able to pull out a big victory when we weren't firing on all cylinders," Smith said. "It shows we have the potential to still improve."
The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday for a non-conference match at St. Francis.
