St. Louis, Mo. - For the second-straight game, the Lewis University men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals, led by a pair of tallies from senior midfielder Jose Ibarra (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) to secure the 4-2 come-from-behind Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Missouri-St. Louis at Don Dallas Field on Sunday (Sept. 19) afternoon.
Ibarra had two goals and an assist, while sophomore forward Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) chipped in a goal and two helpers on the afternoon.
With the victory, Lewis improves to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while the host Tritons fall to 3-2-1 on the campaign and 2-2-1 in GLVC action.
UMSL jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead in the first half behind goals from Almin Sabotic and Evan Schumaker. Lewis junior forward Aloiso Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha/Marshalltown C.C.) evened up the score at 2-apiece heading into halftime, as he scored off a cross pass from Ramirez at the 37:55 mark.
The score would remain knotted up at two for the first 27 minutes of the second half, before Ibarra scored his second goal of the day in the 72nd minute off an assist from Ramirez.
Six minutes later, Ibarra would return the favor, as the Romeoville, Ill., native assisted on Ramirez' third goal of the season.
Offensively, Lewis outshot UMSL, 23-9, and 12 shots on goal to the Tritons' four.
"We had a few guys step up today like Aloiso and Cris Ramirez," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "They had the opportunity to get on the field today and I thought they performed well.
"I thought we created a lot of opportunities offensively, but we have to be smarter on the defensive end too."
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Sept. 24) afternoon, as the Flyers welcome Bellarmine to the Lewis Soccer Field for a 12 PM first kick.
