JOLIET, Ill. - Senior Rachel Ruedi (Mahomet, Ill./Mahomet Seymour) recorded a triple-double to help No. 8 Lewis defeat St. Francis 3-2 (18-25, 25-16, 29-27, 22-25, 15-8) on Tuesday evening in a non-conference road match.
Ruedi finished with 46 assists, 18 digs and 11 kills. Freshman Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) totaled with 25 digs.
"Amy on coverage and scrappy plays keeps us alive and continues to give us chances to earn points," head coach Lorelee Smith said. "She keeps getting better and tonight was probably her strongest match."
Sophomore Jen Krumwiede (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial/IPFW) led Lewis with 12 kills. Senior Lauren Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx) totaled a double-double with 19 digs and 10 kills.
Senior Kelly McConkey (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) totaled 13 digs but her serving was the key to the match. Lewis led just 3-2 when she went back to serve and spurred a six point run. She had an ace in the stretch but she also kept the Saints from getting into their offense.
"Kelly's serving came after they won the fourth set," Smith said. "It really gave us the momentum in the fifth."
After dropping the first set, the Flyers inserted Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week Lauren Seliga back in the starting lineup in set two and the floor opened up for the Flyers. Lewis took control of the second set with a 7-0 run midway through the frame.
Lewis took a 5-1 lead in the third set but the frame would come down to the wire, with the score being tied on 15 occasions and changing hands six times. Lewis turned away three St. Francis set points before winning the set on their second set point. Junior Jillian Carlberg (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) had a block assist and two kills for Lewis' final three points in the set.
St. Francis took a quick lead in the fourth set and never trailed. Lewis advanced within a point at 22-21 following an ace serve by McConkey however the Saints would go on to take the set by three points.
Lewis dominated the fifth set, thanks to McConkey's serving, out-hitting the Saints .375 to .095 in the frame.
The Flyers are 15-5 in five set matches under Smith.
St. Francis falls to 14-2. Lewis is 10-1. The Flyers host Quincy on Friday at 7 p.m. in a GLVC match.
