Men's Soccer: Lewis 2, #23 Bellarmine 1 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University's Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling/Emerald Coast United Academy) and Robens Decius (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Glades/East Central) each found the back of the net in helping the Flyer men's soccer team to the 2-1 upset victory over No. 23 Bellarmine at the Lewis Soccer Field on Friday (Sept. 24) afternoon. The win marked Lewis' third-straight victory.
"We didn't beat ourselves today, but we certainly made it difficult on ourselves," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "We executed our plan offensively today and gave ourselves opportunities to score, but we just didn't do it enough.
"We put ourselves behind the eight-ball (with our 1-3 start)," Fiffles continued. "We have to string some wins together, and this was a quality win."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 4-3 overall and 4-2 in GLVC action, while the visiting Knights drop to 4-2-1 on the campaign and 2-2-1 in conference play.
Ramirez put the Flyers on the board in the ninth minute, as he put away a Robert McGowan (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) cross pass that was deflected by Bellarmine goalkeeper Matthew Soyka, for his team-best fourth goal of the season.
Decius extended the Flyers' lead to 2-0 at the 55:42 mark, as he took a beautiful feed from junior Aloiso Barros (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Pampulha/Marshalltown C.C.) and knocked it in off the left goalpost for the score.
Bellarmine cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute, as senior Grant Wheeler headed in a corner kick from Brett Gregory to narrow Lewis' advantage to 2-1.
Lewis sophomore goalkeeper Sebastian Kieruzal (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) made six saves to earn his fourth win of the season.
The Flyers return to action on Sunday (Sept. 26), as the Flyers welcome Kentucky Wesleyan to the Lewis Soccer Field for a 12 PM first kick. The game will be broadcast on Lakeshore Public Television. Lakeshore PTV, which can be seen in 3.5 million households, can be viewed over the air and on satellite through DirecTV and Dish Network on Channel 56, on cable channel 17 in most Northwest Indiana communities, and on 18 and 21 in Chicago and its suburbs.
