Lockport, Ill. - The Lewis University women's tennis team met local rival St. Francis (Ill.) at the Challenge Fitness Courts on Wednesday (Sept. 29) afternoon, and came away with the 7-2 non-conference victory over the Saints in their first dual match of the season.

"We've had a few injuries this semester and it was good for (some of our student-athletes) to get out there again and play," Lewis head women's tennis coach Brett Bridel said. "We got to work on our patience, consistency and long rallies as well."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 1-0 while St. Francis falls to 2-4.

At No. 1 doubles, Lewis freshmen Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) and Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) upended Princess Clemente and Anne-Christine Thompkins, 8-4. Kranczicki also defeated Clemente at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Lewis junior Katie Hargrove (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon) and freshman Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./Elmhurst) teamed up at No. 2 doubles for the 8-2 triumph over Agnieszka Belza and Danielle Emola. Hargrove added a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tompkins at No. 3 singles.

At No. 3 doubles, Flyers senior Clare Kessler (Onalaska, Wis./Aquinas) and sophomore Jody Wagner (Avon, Ohio/Avon) defeated Barb Koziol and Emily Zajda, 8-2. Wagner also claimed victory over Koziol at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
