ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - A year ago the Flyers dropped an overtime decision at Drury. On Monday the Lewis women's soccer team returned the favor by defeating Drury 1-0 in overtime.

Following a scoreless 94 minutes, the Flyers struck in the 95th minute. Sophomore Libby Cooper (Batavia, Ill/Batavia/UW-Milwaukee) sent a long cross from the left side to a streaking sophomore Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) in the middle. Abate had space around her and moved to about 12 yards in front of the goal. Drury goaltender Jessie Sanderson came out to challenge Abate. As she did, Abate powered a shot high above Sanderson's reach and into the back of the goal.

"They worked really hard and won because of it," head coach Chris Koenig said of his team's performance. "We've been learning a new system and I was glad to see the team get a positive result to show for it."

The goal for Abate was the first of the season. Drury held a 15-10 advantage in shots while Lewis led 6-5 in shots on goal. The win marks the Flyers' first over Drury in six tries. Of the six meetings, three have gone to overtime.

Lewis improves to 1-1 (1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference) while Drury falls to 1-2 (0-1 GLVC).

The Flyers continue conference action on Friday when Maryville comes to town. Start time is 2:30 p.m.
