BRISTOL, Tenn. - Behind a career-high 12 kills from redshirt sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) the No. 15 Lewis men's volleyball team swept Mount Olive 26-24, 25-15, 26-24 on Friday afternoon on the campus of King College in Bristol, Tenn. The contest was the first ever meeting between the two schools.

The Flyers used a 12-2 stretch late in the first set to rally back from a 22-14 deficit. Lewis trailed 24-22 when the Flyers scored the final four points of the frame. Petty had two kills and a solo block in the final four-point push.

Lewis dominated the second set, hitting .320 to Mount Olive's -.043. Lewis trailed 15-12 in the third set when Lewis asked for time. The Flyers came out of the break by scoring eight of the next 11 points. Like the first set however, Mount Olive was the first team to earn a set point at 24-23. A kill by Petty tied it up at 24 before a bad set by Mount Olive and a kill by senior Casey Bennett (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union/Long Beach City College) put the match away for Lewis.

"We were a little slow out of the gates but had a nice comeback in the first game," head coach Dan Friend said. "We made some lineup changes in the third and they took a bit to acclimate themselves but were able to pull out the victory."

Petty finished with a .360 hitting percentage to go along with his 12 kills. He also had three blocks (two solo).

"Jay did a nice job for us," Friend said. "He averaged five points per game and had some big points."

Freshman BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) totaled 26 assists and three blocks.

Lewis improves to 1-0 while Mount Olive falls to 0-1. Lewis plays host King College tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. ET.
