ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, however, Lewis women's basketball dropped a 71-66 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision to Drury on Thursday evening.
Turpel's contest was the 30th 20-point game of her career. Her double-double was the fifth of the season, a GLVC high.
Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) totaled seven points, seven assists and tied a career high with five steals. Sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) added 14 points with seven rebounds, two steals and a block.
"I thought Labrenthia played within herself tonight," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "If she can continue to do that she will only improve over her career."
Lewis led for the majority of the opening half. The Flyers led by eight with under five minutes remaining when Drury closed the half on a 10-2 run to make the halftime score 31 all. Drury quickly took the lead in the second half however Lewis fought back to take a 46-45 lead with 14:15 remaining on a Turpel layup. It would be Lewis' final lead. Drury responded with a 10-0 run to take control of the game.
"I liked our intensity especially on the defensive end to start the game," Carlsen said. "But it was the lull in the second half that got us into trouble."
Lewis would cut the Panthers' lead to four points with under a minute to go thanks to a 3-pointer by junior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling), but it would be as close as the Flyers would get.
Lewis shot just 36 percent in the opening half but made up for it by outrebounding Drury 21-to-17. Lewis shot the same 36 percent in the second half, but couldn't make up for it on the glass as Drury out-rebounded Lewis 24-17 in the final half.
Lewis held a 26-15 edge in points off turnovers thanks to 20 Drury miscues.
"When you have the night shooting we did, you better get some things off transition from your defense," Carlsen said. "For 30 minutes we did that."
Drury improves to 12-5 (8-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 8-9 (4-5 GLVC). Lewis hosts Missouri S&T on Saturday at 1 p.m.
