ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Three Flyers scored in double-figures to help Lewis women's basketball to a nearly wire-to-wire victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Missouri S&T 68-64 on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena.
Missouri S&T took their only lead of the game at 16-15 midway through the first half. Lewis responded by taking over the game with a 21-7 run over the next eight minutes. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had eight points during the run. The push helped Lewis take a 40-29 lead into halftime. Lewis extended their lead to as many as 14 in the second half before the Miners pushed it under 10 in the final minutes.
Turpel finished with her conference leading sixth double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added 17 points and five rebounds off the bench.
"We did a nice job today of getting good touches for our post players," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) was the third Flyer with double-digit points, adding 10.
Lewis limited the Miners to 39 percent shooting in the game while shooting 49 percent. The Flyers out-rebounded the Miners 35-to-31.
"I think we had some key situations where we did a good job defensively and on the glass," Carlsen said.
The Miners fall to 14-5 (8-3 GLVC). Lewis gets back to .500 at 9-9 (5-5 GLVC). The Flyers travel to Southern Indiana on Thursday for a 5:15 p.m. ET tip.
