EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Freshman Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington)'s (Washington, Ill./Washington) 3-point attempt with four seconds remaining didn't find the bottom of the basket in Lewis women's basketball's 60-58 loss at Southern Indiana on Thursday evening.
Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) drained her 173rd and 174th career 3-pointers to move into third all-time at Lewis.
The Flyers led for the majority of the first half, holding a lead as large as 11 points. Southern Indiana cut the lead to three points at halftime by converting on two 3-pointers in the half's final minute.
Southern Indiana grabbed the lead four minutes into the second half. The Screaming Eagles extended their advantage to seven points with 10 minutes left before 3-pointers by senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) and junior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) cut the lead to one point. Southern Indiana held a slim lead until 6:20 remaining when senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) made two free throws to make the score 52-51 in favor of the Flyers.
Southern Indiana's Ellen Young made a 3-pointer with 1:47 remaining to give the Screaming Eagles a 57-54 lead. Just 17 seconds later sophomore Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) was fouled while making a jump shot and converted on the free throw to tie it up. Young followed with a layup to give Southern Indiana a 59-57 lead. Rinehart earned a trip to the line on the other end, but made only the second to make it 59-58. Southern Indiana's Cootie Leeberg was fouled with 20 seconds remaining and made just the first free throw, setting up Grayer's game winning attempt on the other end.
Southern Indiana held edges in second chance points (17-10), points off turnovers (18-10) and points in the paint (22-12).
"We gave up too many second chance opportunities, especially in the second half," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We played hard but you have to combine that with playing smart, especially if you want to beat a good team on the road."
Currin had 10 points, nine rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) added 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Rinehart also had 10 points. Turpel totaled eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Southern Indiana improves to 11-8 (7-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Lewis falls to 9-10 (5-6 GLVC). The Flyers are at Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday. Tip-off is 1 p.m.
