ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Two Flyers finished in double-digits on Tuesday night at Neil Carey Arena however Lewis women's basketball dropped the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest to Northern Kentucky 55-45.
The Flyers led for the majority of the first half until NKU's Sadie Bowling closed the opening frame with back-to-back 3-pointers. Her baskets helped NKU hold a 26-21 lead at the break. The first half was a defensive struggle, with neither team shooting over 40 percent from the floor.
The defensive battle continued in the second half. Each time Lewis made a run at NKU the Norse had a response. A layup by senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) cut the Norse lead to two with 13:58 remaining. However NKU scored the next seven points. A jumper in the paint by sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) with just under 10 minutes left made it a three-point game. But minutes later it was again a nine-point NKU lead. Lewis made one more run, cutting the lead to six at 51-45 with 3:21 remaining on a layup by senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg). NKU responded by scoring the game's final four points.
"On the defensive end we did some really nice things," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "However our flow offensively especially in the second half was not good. At times perhaps we didn't trust each other and we'll need to work on that."
Turpel finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Murdock led Lewis with 16 points while adding five rebounds. Currin added eight points and four assists.
Lewis made just 2-of-18 3-point attempts while NKU made 5-of-10.
Lewis held NKU's Casse Mogan, who entered the game averaging 18 points per game, to just nine.
NKU improves to 9-3 (3-1 GLVC). Lewis falls to 6-6 (2-2 GLVC). The Flyers have Wednesday off before returning to the court on Thursday to host UIS at 5:30 p.m.
