Men's Basketball: Lewis 95, UIS 60 in PDF Format
Romeoville, Ill. - All five starters for the Lewis University men's basketball team scored in double-figures and the Flyers knocked down a season-high 12 three-pointers on their way to the 95-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over UIS at Neil Carey Arena (Jan. 6) night.
"I thought we had a little more purpose and stuck together tonight," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. "We just played looser and carefree, so hopefully this game will give us some confidence."
With the win, Lewis improves to 9-7 overall and 2-3 in GLVC action, while the Prairie Stars are now 4-8 on the season and 0-5 in conference play.
Lewis senior guard Dennis Thomas, Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis./Bradley Tech) led the Flyers with a game high 20 points and five assists. Thomas' backcourt mates Chris McClellan (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Wheeling) and David Bryant (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) scored 13 points apiece.
Thomas, McClellan, Bryant, along with juniors David Luster (South Holland, Ill./Seton Academy/Johnson County C.C.) and Justin Jarosz (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) shot a combined 63.1% (12-for-19) from beyond the three-point arc.
Junior forward Matt Toth (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) returned to the starting line-up and responded with 12 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while classmate Marty Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) posted 11 points in the win.
"We had some good balance tonight," Trost said. "We got some guys some playing time, which is good to see, but now we need to get the next one."
The Flyers were equally as effective on the defensive end, as Lewis held UIS to a 32.7% (18-for-55) shooting performance from the floor. Lewis, who entered the game holding the league's best rebounding defense, continued that trend on Thursday night, as the Flyers out-rebounded UIS, 39-26.
UIS junior forward Michael Fakuade led the Prairie Stars with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Steffen Spinks came off the bench to score 12 points.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Jan. 8) evening, as the Flyers welcome GLVC North rival, Quincy, to Neil Carey Arena for a 7:45 p.m. (CST) tip-off.
