ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Junior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) recorded 10 rebounds and seven points in 20 minutes but Lewis women's basketball fell to Quincy at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday 83-54.
It was a tale of two halves as Lewis held a 20-12 advantage midway through the first half. Quincy rallied to lead at halftime 38-34. The Lady Hawks turned it on in the second half, outscoring Lewis 45-20.
"We came out of the gates well intensity wise but we weren't able to sustain it," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
Quincy shot 56.7 percent in the second half while limiting Lewis to 19.4 percent shooting.
"I think we allowed a couple offensive struggles to affect our effort on the defensive end," Carlsen said. "That can't happen against anyone in the league, but especially a team like Quincy."
Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) led Lewis with nine points. Sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) added eight. Carbaugh and junior Madeline Kish (Oak Forest, Ill./Sandburg/Eastern Illinois) each totaled seven points.
"Dev (Carbaugh) isn't back 100 percent yet," Carlsen said. "But it's nice to get her back in the mix, especially on the glass."
Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) grabbed 11 of her 12 rebounds in the first half. Quincy limited Turpel to just two points, her lowest output as a starter in her career.
Lewis falls to 7-7 (3-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Quincy improves to 12-1 (4-1 GLVC). Lewis is off for a week before returning to the court on Saturday against Indianapolis. Tip-off at Neil Carey Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
