ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Thanks to a solid defensive effort and a lucky bounce the Lewis women's soccer team defeated William Jewell 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The win puts Lewis back over .500 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Flyers scored two minutes into the second half on an own goal. Sophomore
Ariel Miller (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) sent a cross from the left side intended for sophomore
Hillary Cooper (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia/Eastern Kentucky) about seven yards in front of the goal. A William Jewell defender tried to deflect the pass but instead chipped it over her own goalkeeper's head into the net.
“It was nice to have a ball bounce our way today,” Lewis head coach
Chris Koenig said.
The two squads played a scoreless first half though the Flyers held possession for the majority of the period.
Lewis finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots. The Flyers had nine corner kicks while William Jewell failed to earn a corner kick.
Sophomore
Arianna Nie (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln Way East) recorded seven saves to earn the shutout. It is Lewis' fifth shutout of the season.
“Lots of credit goes to our defenders today,” Koenig said. “I think as a group (they played well), I wouldn't pick just one player.”
William Jewell falls to 6-8 (4-8 GLVC). Lewis improves to 6-6-1 (6-5-1 GLVC). The Flyers celebrated Senior Day before the contest.
The Flyers are next in action on Friday at Missouri S&T. Start time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
