ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis women's hoops defeated Saint Joseph's 87-69 on Thursday evening at Neil Carey Arena after falling to the Pumas last Saturday. The Flyers never trailed in the contest.
Lewis started fast, holding an 8-2 lead less than four minutes into the game when the Pumas asked for time. Lewis took a lead as large as 19 in the first half thanks to balanced scoring as 10 different Flyers recorded points in the opening half. Lewis earned 11 assists on their 18 first half baskets to hold a 42-26 lead at the break.
"We were really good in the first 20 minutes," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Not only did our starters do a great job but we got some great contributions from our bench."
The Pumas cut the Lewis lead to nine points with 4:40 remaining and five points with 3:31 left but both times senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) drained a 3-pointer to help keep the Pumas back.
"Against their half court trap we knew if we could get Kelly the ball in the corner she could step up and knock them down," Carlsen said. "That is what I expect from Kelly."
Lewis made all eight of their free throw attempts down the stretch to increase the final margin of victory to 18 points.
Monaco finished with 17 points thanks to five 3-pointers. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had her eighth double-double of the season with 14 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and a steal. Turpel now ranks second all-time in blocks at Lewis with 117.
Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) added 13 points.
The Lewis bench outscored the Pumas 39-10. Redshirt freshman Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) added nine points and six boards in a reserve role. The Flyers finished with a season-high 22 assists. Lewis wore pink uniforms as part of the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative.
Lewis improves to 11-12 (7-8 GLVC). Saint Joseph's falls to 9-14 (6-9 GLVC). The Flyers host UW-Parkside on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Lewis women's basketball program.
