ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - Lewis women's hoops dropped a 63-51 decision to UW-Parkside on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) scored 17 points in her final home game and moved into fifth in scoring at Lewis with 1,718 career points.
A Monaco 3-pointer, followed by a Turpel 3-point play and another Monaco trey gave Lewis a 21-18 advantage with 11:06 remaining in the first half. But then the Flyers went cold as UW-Parkside went on a 13-0 run over the next six minutes. UW-Parkside held a 35-26 lead at the break. In their earlier meeting the Flyers rallied to tie the game after trailing by double-digits in the second half. There was no such comeback on Saturday.
"I think you saw two teams today with a little different mentalities," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "Our frustration caused more problems while Parkside executed their offense and outworked us at times."
In addition to her 17 points, Turpel had two blocks and two steals.
Turpel, Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and Carol Kruckman (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) were all honored during Senior Day festivities. Currin totaled six points, five rebounds and two assists in her final home game. Monaco drained three 3-pointers for nine points. Kruckman had two points, two rebounds and an assist.
Sophomore Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) provided eight points and five rebounds including three on the offensive glass.
UW-Parkside's Amy Selk had 19 points and 15 rebounds. Kaitlyn Bettiga totaled 10 assists and nine points.
The Flyers wore pink uniforms for the second consecutive game as part of the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative.
UW-Parkside improves to 18-5 (12-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference) while Lewis falls to 11-13 (7-9 GLVC). The Flyers return to action at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at No. 11 Quincy. Lewis then concludes the regular season on Saturday at UIS.
