Las Vegas, Nev. - The Lewis University softball team was able to mount two rallies on Saturday (Feb. 12) evening, but was only able to complete the comeback in one of those games, as the Flyers dropped the opener to Academy of Art, 3-2, but came-from-behind to earn the 8-6 regional victory over Upper Iowa in the second day of Desert Stinger Tournament action at Majestic Park.
Lewis junior right fielder Katie Healy (Homewood, Ill./Marian Catholic) was the leading hitter for the Flyers on Saturday, as she batted a combined .714 (5-for-7) with a RBI and a run scored. Sophomore right fielder Lauren Hanford (Morris, Ill./Morris) keyed the comeback over Upper Iowa in the nightcap, as she went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
With the split, Lewis is now 3-1 on the season.
In the opener, Academy of Art jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Flyers tied it up with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings. The Urban Knights, however, secured the win as Jayme Stewart touched Lewis pitcher Alyssa Moseley (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) for a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Moseley was the tough-luck loser for the Flyers in her collegiate debut, as she took the complete-game loss, allowing three runs and seven hits in six innings pitched. She also added a pair of hits.
In the nightcap, the Flyers had to battle back again, as Upper Iowa jumped out to a 5-1 advantage after three innings.
The Flyers responded with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Healy (3-for-4, RBI, run) and sophomore designated player Phoebe Conner (Munster, Ind./Munster) to bring Lewis to within one run at 5-4. Conner went 2-for-3 at the dish with a RBI and a run scored.
Lewis rode that momentum into the sixth inning with another three-run frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Hanford and a RBI double by freshman catcher Alex Washkowiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) to give the Flyers the 7-5 lead.
Upper Iowa cut Lewis' lead in half in the bottom of the sixth as Erin Van Praag connected on a solo home run off Moseley to bring the Peacocks to within one at 7-6.
The Flyers added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a RBI fielders choice by sophomore center fielder Jayme Hefler (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) to extend Lewis' lead to 8-6.
Moseley (1-1) earned the win against the Peacocks as she tossed 4.1 innings of relief, allowing one run and five hits while striking out three batters. Junior Karissa Habel (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) picked up the save tossing 0.2 innings of scoreless relief.
