QUINCY, Ill. - Lewis women's basketball dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference road game on Thursday evening to No. 13 Quincy 86-71. Junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her first start since December due to injury.
Lewis led by as many as seven early but with eight minutes left in the first half Quincy earned a double-digit lead. The Lady Hawks held a double-digit lead for the rest of the half. Quincy led 47-35 at the break.
Quincy extended their lead to 17 points early in the second half only to see Lewis cut it to nine at 74-65 on a layup by senior Carol Kruckman (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) with 6:22 remaining. Quincy followed with six straight points to halt Lewis' hopes of a comeback.
"Our mentality in the second half was much more competitive than in the first half," head coach Lisa Carlsen said.
The Lady Hawks' Courtney Shuman led all players with 24 points.
Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and a block. Sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) added 10 points. Freshman Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) added eight points off the bench in 16 minutes.
"Lex (Grayer) played hard not just on the offensive end but on both ends of the floor," Carlsen said.
Lewis held a 40-35 edge on the glass, including an 18-8 advantage on the offensive boards. The Flyers committed 19 turnovers while Quincy had 18 turnovers. However the Lady Hawks scored 29 points off turnovers while Lewis scored just 13.
Quincy improves to 24-2 (16-2 GLVC). Lewis falls to 11-14 (7-10 GLVC). The Flyers close the regular season on Saturday at UIS. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
