SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Lewis women's basketball dropped the 2010-11 regular season finale 72-69 at UIS on Saturday afternoon. Lewis cut a late 10-point deficit to one in the final minute but couldn't complete the comeback.

The Flyers trailed 68-58 with 3:47 remaining. Lewis went on a 9-1 over the next minute and change to advance within two at 69-67 with 1:52 remaining. Following a UIS free throw, senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) made a layup to make it 70-69 with 47 seconds remaining. UIS followed with two free throws to go up by the three point margin they would win by after Lewis couldn't tie it up on the final possession of the game.

The final rallied late despite senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) fouling out with 3:23 remaining. Backup point guard sophomore Rachel Woodruff (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing/Grand Valley State) wasn't healthy and wasn't in uniform so sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) took up the point for the next two minutes until she also fouled out. This left forward Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) bringing the ball up down the stretch.

Lewis shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor and 67.7 percent from the free throw line (21-of-31). Lewis was led by Turpel's 14 points. Junior Lory Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township/UW-Green Bay) added 12 points and 11 rebounds. Currin scored 11 points. Currin had the first points of the game on a 3-pointer after almost three scoreless minutes to start the game. The Flyers led by six with 5:08 remaining in the first half but a UIS 10-0 run helped give the Prairie Stars a 36-34 advantage at halftime. The Flyers took the lead twice in the second half but never after the 15:56 minute mark.

"Give credit to Springfield they showed a lot of pride today," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We have about five days to figure out if we're a one and done team ready to pack it in or if we're going to play like the way I know we can."

UIS improves to 8-18 (3-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference). Lewis falls to 11-15 (7-11 GLVC).

Lewis' next game will be on Saturday on the road in the opening round of the GLVC Tournament. Thanks to losses by Bellarmine and Saint Joseph's the Flyers are the No. 9 seed despite the loss to UIS. Lewis will play the No. 4 seed, either Missouri S&T or Drury. Missouri S&T holds a 14-4 GLVC record. Drury is 13-4 with a game against Rockhurst on Sunday. A Drury win bumps Missouri S&T to the No. 4 seed. A Drury loss drops them to the No. 4 seed and a date with the Flyers with Missouri S&T jumping to third. The Rockhurst at Drury game starts at 5:30 p.m. CT on Sunday.
