No. 14 Men's Volleyball Cruises To 3-0 Win Over Saint Francis (Pa.)

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - No. 14 Lewis men's volleyball out-hit Saint Francis (Pa.) .402 to .198 en route to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 sweep of the Red Flash Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena.

Sophomore Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) hit .652 with 16 kills on 23 attempts and only one error. Junior Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) continued his stellar play with eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 clip. He also added five block assists. Senior Brian Muesenfechter (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers) had five blocks (one solo) with three kills and two aces. Sophomore Ian Karbiener (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) added nine kills and three block assists.

"It was a really good team effort tonight," head coach Dan Friend said. "We had a tough loss a few days ago and the guys came out tonight and performed well."

As a team Lewis out-blocked Saint Francis 11.0 to 4.0. Lewis held a 28-20 edge in digs.

"We worked on some things we didn't do well on Tuesday (at Loyola)," Friend said. "We blocked a few balls and dug a few more too."

The Flyers raced out to a 17-13 lead in the opening set only to see the Red Flash score five straight to take the lead. Their lead didn't last long as Lewis scored four of the next five points to grab a 21-19 lead. Three of the four Lewis points came on blocks.

Lewis held leads of 5-1, 13-3 and 20-9 in the second set as the Flyers never looked back.

The third set was a big tougher for the Flyers. The Red Flash were the ones to take a quick 10-4 lead. Lewis was able to get back in it with a 4-0 run. Muesenfechter had two aces during the push. Lewis finally tied it at 14 on a Red Flash attack error. The Flyers put the match away with three straight points after the score was tied at 18. Petty had two kills and Karbiener had a kill in three-point stretch. Lewis never trailed again.

St. Francis falls to 7-7. Lewis improves to 11-4. The Flyers return to the court on Saturday with a non-conference match against Juniata. First serve is 7 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena.
