SOMERS, Wis. - Lewis women's hoops dropped a 73-61 Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at UW-Parkside on Friday evening. The Flyers rallied from a 14-point second half deficit to tie the game with 10:56 remaining, but could never take the lead in the second half.
The Rangers shot 61.9 percent in the opening half, helping UW-Parkside hold a 38-28 lead at the break. UW-Parkside extended their lead to 14 points three minutes into the second half. Then the Flyers came to life, going on a 20-6 run to tie the score at 50. Senior Kelly Monaco (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) had a pair of 3-pointers in the push. The game was tight for the next five minutes until UW-Parkside pulled away with a 9-0 run from the 5:35 mark to 3:01 remaining.
"They did a better job of executing their game plan for 40 minutes than we did," head coach Lisa Carlsen said. "We just had too many poor possessions and against a good team those are tough to overcome."
Lewis was led by sophomore Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake)'s (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) 13 points. She also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists. Senior Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior Kady Currin (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) totaled nine points and five assists. Junior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) also totaled nine points.
UW-Parkside improves to 17-5 (11-3 GLVC). The Flyers fall to 10-11 (6-7 GLVC). The Flyers are next in action on Sunday at Saint Joseph's. The game will start at noon. It was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was pushed back a day due to the blizzard.
