Women's Soccer Falls in Overtime to Drury 2-1

Flyers drop tight 2-1 decision at Drury for second straight year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Lewis women's soccer team was 20 seconds away from a second overtime in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Drury on Sunday when suddenly the contest was over. Drury's Nicole Williams headed in a pass from Katie Pritchard at the 99:80 mark to lift Drury to a 2-1 victory over Lewis.

"It was a pretty evenly matched contest but I feel like they did a better job on set pieces and corners in terms of getting themselves free," head coach Chris Koenig said. "It came down to focus for 90 plus minutes today and they had that one play that was the difference."

Following a scoreless first half, Lewis went on top first when Danielle Warner (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) scored her first career goal off a Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) assist at the 66:19 mark. Drury countered with a goal from Mandi Little, with Emily West earning the assist, at 70:09. It stayed deadlocked at 1-1 through the end of regulation.

It is the second straight season the Flyers have fallen at Drury by a 2-1 score. Last season Lewis allowed a Panthers' tally in the final 10 minutes of regulation for the tough luck loss.

"The girls are frustrated because they knew this was an opportunity," Koenig said. "Now the two matches next weekend become must wins."

The Panthers improve to 3-1-0 (1-0-0 GLVC). Lewis is now 1-2-1 (0-1-0 GLVC). The Flyers look for their first conference win of the season at Missouri S&T on Friday.

A Catholic university sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, Lewis offers nearly 80 undergraduate majors and programs of study, accelerated degree completion options for working adults, various aviation programs and 22 graduate programs in nine fields. The 10th largest private, not-for-profit university in Illinois is being honored for the sixth consecutive year by The Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report.
