The Lewis women's basketball team dropped an 80-74 decision to Bellarmine last Thursday (Jan. 19), followed by a 59-44 loss at Northern Kentucky on Saturday.
Four Flyers, led by a career-high 18 points from sophomore guard Alexis Grayer, scored in double digits against Bellarmine.
During the first half against Northern Kentucky, the Norse took control of the contest by jumping out to a 10-point advantage. The Flyers, however, answered with an 8-0 run, led by five points from freshman guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) to narrow NKU's lead to 22-20 with 40 seconds remaining in the half. That was as close as Lewis would get, as Northern Kentucky pulled away for the win.
Lewis (4-13, 2-7 GLVC) returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 26) hosting Indianapolis at 5:30 p.m. in a rematch of the 2011 GLVC Championship. The game will be aired live on Lakeshore Public Television. Lewis wraps up the weekend with a 1 p.m. showdown against Saint Joseph's on Saturday (Jan. 28).

The Lewis men's basketball team saw its three-game win streak come to an end last week, as the Flyers dropped a pair of contests against a pair of nationally ranked teams in No. 2 Bellarmine (84-56) on Thursday (Jan. 19) and No. 9 Northern Kentucky (77-66) on Saturday (Jan. 21).
Against the Knights, Lewis was unable to overcome a season-high 21 turnovers, as Bellarmine posted 32 points off of the Flyer miscues. Lewis freshman guard Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) led the Flyers with 12 points, including a perfect 3-for-3 outing from three-point range.
The Flyers turned around two days later to face a tough Northern Kentucky squad that came into the contest averaging 10 three-pointers per game. The Norse did not disappoint, as they hit 15 three-pointers against the Flyers in the win. Northern Kentucky built a 61-44 second-half lead, before Lewis responded with a 20-3 run to cut the Norse's lead to 68-64 with 4:38 left in the contest. Senior forward Justin Jarosz (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) would lead the run with eight points, including two three-pointers in the charge. This would be as close as the Flyers got to the victory, as Northern Kentucky would score nine of the next 11 points to take the victory.
Lewis (11-6, 3-6 GLVC) faces another nationally-ranked foe on Thursday (Jan. 26), as the Flyers host No. 21 Indianapolis for a 7:45 p.m. tip-off. On Saturday (Jan. 28), Lewis travels to Indiana to take on the Pumas of Saint Joseph's at 3:00 p.m.

The No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball team hosted Penn State, the then No. 6 ranked team in the country, Saturday (Jan. 21) evening in front of a sold-out crowd defeating the Nittany Lions 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 25-20). The win marked Dan Friend's first career win against Penn State and it was a welcomed present on his birthday.
Freshman Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led the Flyers with a match-high 14 kills, hitting a .522 on the night. Petty's performance earned him an AVCA National Player of the Week nod. Junior Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) added 13 kills with a .370 hitting percentage and three aces. Sophomore setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) finished with 38 assists and five block assists. The Flyers out-hit Penn State .429 to .213, as well as held a dominating advantage in blocks (10.5 to 2.5).
Lewis moves up in the AVCA rankings to No. 7, the highest the Flyers have been ranked since the preseason poll in 2004. The Flyers look to extend their hot steak as they welcome St. Francis (Pa.) to the Neil Carey Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. and George Mason on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 7 p.m.

Lewis men's and women's swimming's meet against Wayne State scheduled for Saturday (Jan. 21) was canceled due to snowy conditions in the Midwest. The Flyers will push aside the wintery weather this Friday (Jan. 27) in a home meet with Lincoln College at 5 p.m. It will be 'Senior Night' celebrating Chris Bonovolanto and Ashley Kryger's careers with the Flyers.
The Flyers will then head to Indianapolis on Saturday (Jan. 28) for a GLIAC showdown at 1:00 p.m. ET.

For the second straight week Lewis senior Samantha Linck (Kohler, Wis./Kohler) captured a provisional mark in the high jump as she earned a first place finish with a 1.71 meters to lead the Flyers at the Dick Pond Track and Field Invitational, hosted by Lewis. Junior Alexis Atkins (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.56 meters. The delays caused by the cold weather would prove to not phase Lewis as five other Flyers placed first in their events.
On the men's side, the Flyers also showed determination as they powered through the delay to win six events at the invitational.
Lewis returns to action Friday (Jan. 27), as the Flyers head to Bloomington, Ind., to participate in the Indiana Relays.
