Lewis women's hoops (3-7, 1-1 GLVC) starts the new year with a conference contest at Maryville (Mo.) (4-6, 0-2 GLVC) on Thursday, Jan. 5. The game is the first of 16 Great Lakes Valley Conference contests to close the season. Tip-off at Moloney Arena in St. Louis, Mo. is 5:15 p.m.
AGAINST THE SAINTS - Lewis is 2-0 all-time against Maryville. Lewis defeated Maryville on Dec. 2, 2010 77-56.
Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) was one of four Lewis players in double-digits. She finished with 11 points. The Flyers took down the Saints on Dec. 5, 2009 84-59 in the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake), in her freshman season, had 18 points off the bench for Lewis.
MURDOCK FROM THE FLOOR -
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) is having the best shooting season of he career. So far in 2011-12 she is shooting 43.0 percent from the floor (49-of-114). It's above last season's average of 42.1 percent (114-of-271) and her freshman-year shooting percentage of 36.5 percent (97-of-266).
YOUNG BY THE NUMBERS - Lewis' eight newcomers have combined to play 876 minutes, or 42.7 percent of the available court time. The seven have scored 245 points, or 37.3 percent of Lewis' 657 points.
REJECTED - Sophomore
Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) ranks fourth in the GLVC in blocked shots per game with a 1.60 average. She's recorded a block in every game this season except for the Dec. 3rd contest against Kentucky Wesleyan. She totaled four against McKendree on Nov. 14.
THEY'RE FREE FOR A REASON - Junior
Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) is shooting 82.4 percent (28-of-34) from the free throw line this season, seventh best in the GLVC. It is her best season from the free throw line of her career. She shot 60.0 percent (15-of-25) as a freshman and 69.8 percent (37-of-53) as a sophomore.
STEALIN' -
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) has a steal in all 10 games this season.
PERFECT FROM BEYOND THE ARC - Lewis made all five of their second half 3-point attempts against Southern Indiana on Dec, 1. The last time Lewis made every 3-point attempt in a half was when the Flyers drained all five attempts in the first half against Butler on Nov. 21, 2004. Lewis dropped the game at Hinkle Fieldhouse 71-59.
TAKING IT AWAY - The Flyers recorded 20 steals against BYU-Hawaii on Nov. 24th. It was the first time Lewis earned 20 steals in a game since recording 20 at Kentucky Wesleyan on Jan. 20, 2005.
ADDING AN ALL-AMERICAN - The Flyers have added an All-American to their roster.
Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan), a 6-2 right-side hitter for the Lewis women's volleyball team, joined the team on Dec. 8. She was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team in late November following a stellar senior season with the Lewis women's volleyball team. She recorded a team-high 299 kills with 91 blocks for the Flyers in 2011 and helped Lewis to a 25-7 record. She joins the Lewis women's basketball team with junior eligibility.
LOOKING FORWARD - The Flyers will take Friday off before playing at UMSL on Saturday in a 1 p.m. start.
THREE GAMES, FIVE DAYS - Following Lewis' stretch in St. Louis the Flyers return home for three games over a span of five days. First up is Quincy on Thursday, Jan. 12. Then UIS comes to town two days later. UW-Parkside makes the short drive south to play the Flyers on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 16. All three games have a 5:30 p.m. tip time. Lewis only has four home games the rest of the season following the stretch.
