ST. LOUIS – A career-high 25 points from junior
Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) wasn't enough to get the Lewis women's basketball team in the win column on Thursday (Jan. 5) evening at Maryville as the Flyers dropped the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest 76-65.
Murdock scored her 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting. She also had five steals and a block.
Maryville led 39-33 at halftime and extended their lead to 11 points midway through the second half. The Flyers twice cut the Saints' lead to four points over the next five minutes but an 8-0 Maryville run after the game's final media timeout gave the Saints breathing room to pull away. Lewis' second half push was fueled partly by junior
Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) (Marion, Iowa/Marion), who scored all but one of her 13 points in the game's final 20 minutes.
In the end the Flyers were doomed by 22 turnovers which the Saints converted to 27 points. Lewis' turnovers combined with 16 Maryville offensive rebounds gave the Saints 71 shot attempts to Lewis' 54.
"We didn't take care of the basketball tonight," head coach
Lisa Carlsen said. "It makes getting an offensive flow difficult."
Maryville improves to 5-6 (1-2 GLVC) while the Flyers fall to 3-8 (1-2 GLVC). Lewis returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. start at GLVC foe Missouri-St. Louis.
