Lewis Women's Volleyball Sweeps Michigan Tech, IU Kokomo at Home

Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's volleyball (15-8) team swept Michigan Tech, 3-0, and Indiana University Kokomo, 3-0, in back-to-back non-conference matches on Monday (Oct. 15) at Neil Carey Arena to extend their home winning streak to eight matches. 

"After a really long weekend of volleyball at the Crossover Tournament, we managed to figure out how to win back-to-back matches today," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said.

In the first match against the Michigan Tech Huskies (7-15), the Flyers were led by senior Jen Krumwiede's (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) fourth double-double in a row of 13 digs and 12 kills. She also had two blocks and two assists in the Flyers three set victory (25-23, 27-25, 25-16). 

Junior Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) was back in the libero position agianst the Huskies, getting 14 digs, while sophomore setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 28 assists. Senior Jillian Carlberg (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) had seven blocks, six kills and two digs. 

In the nightcap against Indiana University Kokomo (7-23), red-shirt sophomore Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) led Lewis with 12 kills in the three set victory (25-17, 25-18, 25-18). Red-shirt freshman Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had a double-double agianst the Cougars, getting 11 kills and 10 digs. 

"Everybody played and I was really happy about the amount of effort and the attitude everyone had on the bench and on the court," Smith said. "They really supported each other and we came away with two big wins."

Lewis' is next in action on Saturday (Oct. 20) at Neil Carey Arena when the squad hosts William Jewel, getting back into Great Lakes Valley Conference play. First serve is set for 5 PM.
