Lewis Women’s Soccer Gets a 2-1 Victory at Indianapolis

Indianapolis, Ind. - The Lewis University women's soccer team defeated the University of Indianapolis, 2-1, on Sunday (Oct. 21) to have double-digit wins in a season for the first time since 1997 when the team finished the year at 12-6. 

The Flyers improve to 10-5-1 on the season and 8-5-1 against Great Lakes Valley Conference teams while Indianapolis falls to 7-9 on the season, 6-8 in the GLVC.
 
“I am very proud of the team,” Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. “I think the team stepped up to win when they knew that they were in control of their postseason.”
 
Freshman Maggie Moran (Arlignton Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) scored her sixth goal of the season on a shot into the lower left corner of the goal to put Lewis on the board first in the 39th minute. Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) was credited with the assist when sent a pass up the field to Moran for the goal. 
 
Indianapolis tied the score at 1-all in the 54th minute off a Kristen Conway penalty kick.
 
Lewis senior Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute for the game-winning goal.
 
"This was a very big win for us today," Koenig said. "The team didn't back away from the situation."
 
Lewis is next in action on Wednesday, (Oct. 24) when the team travels to take on UW-Parkside to wrap up the 2012 regular season. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM.
