Somers, Wis. - University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Emily Konior scored the game-winning goal in the 56th minute to defeat the Lewis University women's soccer team, 1-0, on Wednesday (Oct. 24) at Wood Road Field to wrap up the 2012 regular season.
UWP scored on a free kick by Konior at the 55:28 mark, using a set play to put the ball past Lewis goalkeeper
Mara Bennett (Portage, Mich./Portage Central).
The Flyers fall to 10-6-1 on the year and 8-6-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Rangers improve to 12-3-1 and 11-3 in conference play.
"While I am disapointed in the result," Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. "This game was a good experience to go though before we head into the conference tournament this weekend."
The teams battled through the first half to 0-0 stalemate. The Flyers kept the pressure on the Rangers defense, out shooting them 11-4.
Freshmen
Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora),
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) and
Lauren Grady (Algonquin, ill./Jacobs) and senior
Fran Abate (Bartlett, Ill./Bartlett) each had one of Lewis' four shots on goal.
"It was difficult for both teams to score in the flow of play," Koenig said. "Give the Rangers credit, their goalkeeper made some big saves to protect their lead at the end of the game."
Lewis now awaits its seeding and first round opponent for this weekend's Great Lakes Valley Confernce tournament. The match will be either Saturday (Oct. 27) or Sunday (Oct. 28) at a time to be determined.
