2012 GLVC Championship Tournament Bracket

Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's soccer team has been slated into the No. 7 seed in the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament and will travel to Liberty, Mo. to take on the No. 2 seed William Jewell on Sunday (Oct. 28) at 2 PM.

The appearance in the GLVC Tournament is the Flyers' first since the 1997 campaign.

“This group has worked very hard to get back to the point where we can compete for a championship," Lewis head women's soccer coach Chris Koenig said. "However, our players understand that the goal this year was not simply to get to the postseason, but to win a championship."

The Flyers (10-6-1) and the Cardinals (13-1-3) already battled on the pitch on Sept. 14th, with Lewis winning 3-2 on a game-winning goal by freshman Jessica Saffell (Aurora, Ill./Aurora West) in the waning seconds of the game.

Saffell is just one of a few underclassmen that have played a key role in the Flyers' success this season. In all, Lewis' underclassmen have scored 28 out of the Flyers' 31 goals this season. In 2011, Lewis managed 18 goals for the entire season.

"We knew that if we won each third of the season we would have this opportunity and we were able to do that," Koenig said. "The team is excited to be heading back to the tournament and to play a quality team like William Jewell.

"It should be a fantastic environment Sunday.”
