Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team (6-1) welcomes Upper Iowa (3-8) on Wednesday (Dec. 19) to Neil Carey Arena in the last non-conference contest before heading into Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS - Coach Carol Russell is in her third season leading Upper Iowa' women's basketball program. Guard Whitney Kieffer leads the Peacocks averaging 18.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. The Peacocks, 0-5 in the Northern Sun, are coming off a 60-52 loss to No. 12 Wayne State College.
ALL TIME SERIES - The Flyers have a 3-1 series lead.
COMMON FOES - The Peacocks have already faced two GLVC opponents at home this season. Upper Iowa defeated William Jewell 82-77 (OT) on Nov. 10, but fell to UW-Parkside 60-53 on Nov. 13.
THE LAST MATCH-UP - Lewis hit six free throws late to escape Upper Iowa's Dorman Gymnasium with a 90-86 double overtime victory on Nov. 18, 2011. Jess Reinhart and Alexus Grayer each had 18 points in the win.
HOME ON THE ROAD - The Flyers extended their record on the road to 4-0 when they defeated Lincoln Memorial, 74-63, on Sunday (Dec. 16). Reinhart scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
NATIONAL RANKINGS - Lewis is No. 17 nationally with a scoring average of 77.9 points-per-game while the team's 3-point field goal percentage (40.0) puts them seventh.
GUARDS NATIONALLY RANKED - Senior Labrenthia Murdock is fifth with a 53.8% three-point field goal percentage while sophomore Nikki Nellen is 14th nationally averaging 5.6 assists per game.
TOP BLOCKERS - Flyers Kristin Itschner and Mariyah Henley are tied atop the squad with six blocks each.
FEARLESS FRESHMAN - Guard Alyssa Dengler, averaging 12.3 minutes a game, has only committed one turnover with 11 assists and been whistled for only two fouls this season.
ALL-TIMER - Murdock is 10th in school history in total blocked shots (65).
NUMBERS VS THE GLVC - The Flyers rank in the Top-3 in seven different categories overall in the GLVC.
- 1st in 3-point field goal percentage (.400)
- 2nd in points (77.9); defensive rebounds per-game (30.9); assists-per-game (17.4)
- 3rd in made 3-point field goals (46 total, 6.6 per-game); field goal percentage (.448 195 made-435 attempts) and blocked shots (28 total, 4.0 per-game).
INDIVIDUAL FLYERS STACKING UP IN THE GLVC - Nellen's 5.6 assists per-game average and Murdock's .538 3-point field goal percentage (14-for-26) tops the GLVC. Reinhart is second with 16.6 points per-game average and is fourth with 8.9 rebounds-per-game.
