Complete Game Notes

The 2011-12 home slate is winding down for the Lewis women's basketball team (4-16, 2-10 GLVC). Saturday's (Feb. 4) contest with Bellarmine (10-10, 4-8 GLVC) is the second to last home game of the season for the Flyers. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. The game can be heard on WJOL 1340 AM with LewisFlyers.com featuring live stats and a free video webcast.
 
AGAINST THE KNIGHTS - Bellarmine leads the all-time series 38-19.  
 
LAST TIME WE MET - The Flyers and Knights met on Jan. 19 of this season in Louisville. The Knights took the contest 80-74. Kylie Brady had 20 points for the Knights. Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) scored 18 and Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) added 14 for the Flyers. The Knights led by as many as 19 in the first half only to see Lewis cut the deficit to 38-34 at halftime. Lewis led 62-61 with 4:59 remaining but the Knights closed out the Flyers down the stretch.
 
ONE MORE TIME! - Each game the rest of the season is against a GLVC East Division opponent the Flyers have already played once this season.
 
CANCEL THE BLOCK PARTY - Lewis failed to record a block against Saint Joseph's on Saturday. It is the only game this season Lewis has failed to record a block. Lewis ranks sixth in the GLVC in blocks with 3.50 per game.
 
CARBAUGH TIME - Senior Devon Carbaugh (Sterling, Ill./Sterling) rejoined the starting lineup on Thursday, Jan. 26 against Indianapolis. She added nine points and seven rebounds against the Greyhounds before scoring 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting at St. Joseph's on Saturday. 
 
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN - Since the Flyers' game against UW-Parkside on Jan. 16 sophomore Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) is shooting 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from 3-point range.
 
FOR STARTERS - The Flyers have used 11 starting lineups this season.
 
WRITE HER NAME IN INK - Freshman point guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) is the only Flyer to have started every game for the Flyers.
 
IT MUST BE THE NUMBER - Freshman Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic), who wears the same 34 jersey number of fourth all-time scorer at Lewis Jenny Turpel (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) (1,819 points), put on a Turpel-esque performance on Saturday at Saint Joseph's by scoring 27 points. The total was the highest for a Flyer this season. Turpel however never scored more than 20 points in a game during her freshman season. Coincidently though, Turpel's career high of 37 came against the same Saint Joseph's team on Feb. 4, 2010.
 
REINHART OF GOLD - Since being inserted into the starting lineup on Jan. 14 against UIS, freshman Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) is averaging 13.7 points per game and shooting 50.7 percent (37-of-73) from the floor. She is taking advantage of her chances at the free throw line, shooting 91.7 percent (22-of-24) from the charity stripe since Jan. 14. She scored in double-digits in six games (from Jan. 14 to Feb. 2). She was the first freshman to score in double-digits in six consecutive games since Darcee Schmidt did so in 20 straight in 2003-04.
 
REINHART AT HER BEST IN THE GLVC - In GLVC games only, Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) ranks 14th in the conference in field goal percentage (46.9 percent). She is the only freshman or sophomore in the top 15 in field goal percentage in conference games.
 
HOW YOUNG ARE THEY? - Lewis' eight newcomers have combined to play 1942 minutes, or 47.9 percent of the available court time. The newcomers have scored 536 points, or 41.6 percent of Lewis' 1287 points.
 
THEY'RE SO YOUNG... - Lewis started four freshmen (Johnson, Nellen, Itschner, Reinhart) with sophomore Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) against UIS on Jan. 14 and UW-Parkside on Jan. 16. It's the first time Lewis started four freshmen in a game since Nov. 21, 2003 when Darcee Schmidt (Machesney Park, Ill./Harlem), Mary Moskal (Cherry Valley, Ill./Rockford Boylan), Erin Cox (Lena, Ill./Lena-Winslow) and Brittney Diener (Fond du Lac, Wis./Fond du Lac) started against Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Lewis won the contest 60-57.
 
ADDING AN ALL-AMERICAN - Hannah Koeneman (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) joined the Lewis women's basketball team on Dec. 8. The name might be familiar to those around the GLVC as she was an American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America Third Team selection as a senior right side hitter for Lewis in 2011. Koeneman recorded a team-high 299 kills with 91 blocks for the Flyers in 2011 and helped Lewis to a 25-7 record. The 6-2 forward with junior status for basketball last played organized basketball in high school.
 
UP NEXT - Lewis travels to Kentucky Wesleyan on Thursday, Feb. 9 to play the Panthers. Start time is 5:15 p.m.
